Darwin and racism: Did Darwin change his mind?

British physicist David Tyler notes this article:
Did Darwin change his mind about the Fuegians?

Gregory Radick

Endeavour, Volume 34, Issue 2, June 2010, Pages 50-54 | doi:10.1016/j.endeavour.2010.04.002

Abstract: Shocked by what he considered to be the savagery he encountered in Tierra del Fuego, Charles Darwin ranked the Fuegians lowest among the human races. An enduring story has it, however, that Darwin was later so impressed by the successes of missionaries there, and by the grandeur they discovered in the native tongue, that he changed his mind. This story has served diverse interests, religious and scientific. But Darwin in fact continued to view the Fuegians as he had from the start, as lowly but improvable. And while his case for their unity with the other human races drew on missionary evidence, that evidence concerned emotional expression, not language.
Also,
From the Intro: Like the notorious tale of Darwin's deathbed conversion to Christianity, this story of a near-deathbed conversion to a more enlightened view of what his generation called the ‘lower races’ has proved tenacious. And as with the former, the evidence for the latter is, we shall see, uncompelling. But in considering it we have the chance to take up a number of worthwhile questions. There is, most obviously, the question of Darwin's attitude to race, the subject of a major new study from Adrian Desmond and James Moore."

[ ... ]

Does it matter that, in all probability, Darwin never changed his mind about the (improvable) lowness of the Fuegians? One might think that the enterprises of missionaries and scientists stand or fall on their merits, whatever Darwin would have thought. And even the most worshipful of his admirers will admit that, by the light of present-day science, Darwin got lots of things wrong, so the possibility of another mistake should hardly be surprising. The stakes are considerably higher, however, for anyone concerned to understand what Darwin wrought and how science and society have changed since his time. Darwinian biology no longer orders the human races hierarchically, of course. But it once did. Learning to live without the myth of a race-egalitarian Darwin is a long way from learning what brought about the change. But it is a step in the right direction.
News around here, actually, that Darwinists would admit that Darwin got anything wrong. If they did, the posterior would be far too big to cover.

Incidentally, Darwin's co-theorist, the much-neglected and subtly maligned Wallace, was not a racist.

Coffee!!: Darwinism as support for racism

I have sometimes been excoriated for saying that Darwinism has been used to support racism.

Well, here is a classical modern day example, from no less a luminary than John Derbyshire:
First, the rational grounds. If a species is divided into separate populations, and those populations are left in reproductive isolation from each other for many generations, they will diverge. If you return after several hundred generations have passed, you will observe that the various traits that characterize individuals of the species are now distributed at different frequencies in the various populations. After a few ten thousands of generations, the divergence of the populations will be so great they can no longer cross-breed; and that is the origin of species. This is Biology 101.

[ ... ]

We see the same differences in traits that we don't think of as directly physical, what evolutionary psychologists sometimes refer to as the "BIP" traits — behavior, intelligence, and personality. Two of the hardest-to-ignore manifestations here are the extraordinary differentials in criminality between white Americans and African Americans, and the persistent gaps in scores when tests of cognitive ability are given to large population samples.

There is a huge academic literature on the gaps in cognitive test results, practically all of it converging on the fact that African American mean scores on cognitive tests fall below the white means by a tad more than one white standard deviation. There is in fact so much data on this now that we have meta-studies — studies of the studies: the one best-known to me is the meta-study by Roth et al. in 2001, which covered 39 studies involving nearly six million test-takers. That one standard deviation on cognitive testing has been so persistent across so many decades, a friend of mine, an academic sociologist, calls it "the universal constant of American sociology" — it's like the speed of light in physics.
Etc.

Read the rest here.

I’m sure glad that I would be unable to demonstrate that I am an African or an American or an African-American. I’d feel so depressed hearing this that I would probably drop out of school, and maybe get frustrated and ... well, if a crime got committed, would reserve my defence.

By the way: Apologies to those who entered recent Uncommon Descent contests, so far unjudged. I was assigned a long chapter of a book on a subject I had never researched. I have not forgotten you. Indeed, I can’t. My Calendar persecutes me every morning. I will get to your entries as soon as I turn in the chapter.

Some people fear God rather than men. I fear men more than Calendars.

Darwinism and popular culture: Von Brunn, accused of murder, was influenced by evolution theory?

Wow, is this another one?

At BeliefNet, David Klinghoffer writes,

Now isn't this fascinating. James von Brunn, the white-supremacist
suspect in today's Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting in which the guard who was shot has now tragically died, describes the relevance of evolution to his sick thinking. He's obsessed with "genetics." He writes in his manifesto (emphasis added):

Aw, go there if you want to know what von Brunn thinks. [If a guy's in jail for murder, on good evidence, I don't care much what he thinks. I reserve that honour for scholars.]

It's the usual sicko stuff, but how come it is so commonly associated with Darwinism?

Both the Columbine school shooter and the Finnish school shooter would understand von B, about "evolution." See links to my files on them here.

The missed link still much missed, but remembered

At African Ota Benga - the missed link, crossposted at UD, I posted a comment I thought I would enlarge on:

In my experience, in order to avoid acknowledging Darwinism's contributions to racism, typical Darwinists perform a little two-step: Darwin = good non-racist; Haeckel = bad racist.

So we blame the "bad" German [WWII losers] for what every "good" British/North American Darwinist [WWII winners] really thought.

And for all I know, what every actual living Darwinist really thinks today.
Otherwise, why can't they just acknowledge the racism, repent and apologize for it, and get past it? Why are textbooks full of explanations about how Darwin didn't really support it (which I discovered to be false when introduced to his actual writings on the subject - but how many students are?)

Darwinists are accomplished at avoiding accountability. I experienced their two-step recently when a Darwinist smarmed that he disagreed with his "friend" Richard Dawkins about the wisdom of attacking traditional Christians directly.
Like, I - as a trad Christian - was supposed to be thrilled with the prospect of being attacked indirectly.

The very fact that he was that guy's "friend" warned me off. (If it's even true - Dawkins is rich, so lots of people probably imagine themselves his friends.)

For the record, I would rather people attack directly. It makes the job of seeing them off the premises more straightforward.

I don't think we are ever going to get accountability from these people before we bury them intellectually. I don't even know what accountability would sound like in their case - it would mean acknowledging that the mind is not simply the brain, for one thing, and that one is not simply the product of one's genes. So why be a Darwinist at all?

(Note: I posted this first as a comment here, and this version is slightly edited.)

Darwin's racism and the fact that it cannot be confronted

Just up at Uncommon Descent (comments box):
"Since ID is not a religious program, but a scientific one, I fail to see why an ID proponent needs comment what a religious organization does or doesn’t do. Evolution is all about science (or so we’re told), as such its founder clearly held racists views drawn directly from the science. If you have a similar connection between racism and ID, we’re all ears." - Donald McL
Thank you, Donald! that is precisely my point.

I certainly do not hold myself responsible for everything anyone has ever done in the name of religion, simply because I am a Catholic Christian.

I have also never held any individual Darwinist responsible for everything anyone has done in the name of Darwinism.

But I am - at best - surprised by the lack of interest of science societies in backing away from Darwin's racism.

It would be EASY to do.

I do not want to quarrel uselessly about this. I am simply asking all members of societies that have made statements supporting Darwin vs. intelligent design to FOLLOW UP with a formal statement *divorcing* Darwin's racism.

Just divorce Descent of Man now! Just DO it!

Don't tell me that you idnividually disagree with it. That means nothing in the current climate.

Now, if the Darwinists do not do it, won't we know something useful?

I think we will know something very useful indeed.

I will be VERY happy to publicise any upcoming divorces from The Descent of Man!

Darwinist, do you or don't you divorce this book?

I hope and pray you do. Look, I have friends and in-laws from across the globe, from all races and nations under heaven.

I want to reach across the ideological divide and ask you to use the "year of Darwin" to finally divorce racism.

And if you don't, we will know.

We will definitely all know whether you did or not.

And most of us will not listen to you in the slightest until you do.

Just do it, okay?

"Evolutionary biology": and racism: Time for truth

I put this in the combox below another post over at Uncommon Descent to a commenter, and then ended up putting it on the front page, for reasons of social responsibility:

I think that "evolutionary biology" is the basket-weaving course of science - but basket weaving keeps some people from crime and drug addiction, after all - so who am I to say it isn't worth doing?

When are "evolutionary biologists" going to get around to admitting Darwin's racism and its consequences?

Here is what I wrote:

When a world association of evolutionary biologists formally acknowledges that “The Descent of Man” is one long racist tract and *disassociates* its members from Darwin’s actual views, I will be impressed.

Otherwise not. And lots of other people will not be impressed either.

In the meantime, attacks on anyone’s character are entirely beside the point.

There is a huge, open, running, rotting Stage 4 sore here - visible to the whole world - that “evolutionary biologists” seem in no hurry to deal with.

It is NO use telling me that no one agrees with Darwin if science associations are not prepared to make a formal statement about his actual views and disassociate themselves from them.

I would have thought that the Darwin year was the exact right time to do just exactly that - especially if it is true that so few biologists are racists, as you say*.

To me, the fact that it never occurred to them to do so is highly significant - given the world we live in.

*I don’t say anything one way or the other about all that except this: I ask for a general retraction of Darwin’s views on race and you can be very sure that I will know what to make of any failure to do so. And it is no use quoting high panjandrums against me.

You can be sure you will be hearing from me again - and again - on this. So why not just deal with it?

[I won't be surprised if I hear nothing but evasions, bumpf, and fulminations. And why is that exactly?]

Gotta hand it to the ol' boy ...

Darwin has master publicists. He really does.

Coming home on the bus today, I suddenly realized how odd it is that the ol' Brit toff racist - whose The Descent of Man is an open running sore of racism - is being celebrated everywhere as some kind of liberator.

Well, I guess he is - if you are a racist, and are looking for a "scientific" cover.

Look, this is a guy who thought black people were closer to gorillas than white people are. The idea is not only wrong and offensive, it is completely ridiculous.

He travelled all around the world and he didn't realize that?*

A physicist friend actually spent some time getting through the book, and was astonished at the racism.

I knew about it, of course, but didn't know how to tell him.

In the current era of worship of St. Darwin, you can't tell people these things. You must just hope that they will somehow find out or figure it out for themselves. After all, there is an Internet ....

The really interesting question for me is, why don't the atheist materialists I have met just admit and repudiate Darwin's racism, instead of telling me how much they admire him and what a great hero he was?

They never do. Is that because they secretly believe it and hope for the day when they can admit it openly?

After all, their theory does leave open the idea that different races could be more or less "evolutionarily"** developed, doesn't it?

I would be happy to learn that, as a group, they have openly and publicly denounced and backed away from Darwin's views instead of just covering them up and making coy excuses like "he was against slavery."***

(*Note: I live in a city that hosts people from all over the world, and have seen just about everything you can imagine. Please don't write to tell me what I supposedly don't know. Human culture is everywhere different but human nature is everywhere the same.)

** "evolutionarily" - it grates on the ear as one of the ugliest adverbs in English. Only a Darwinist could have invented it.

***Lots of racists in good standing have been against slavery. There are perfectly good reasons for opposing slavery that are entirely consistent with racism - and that was true in Darwin's case.

Attempt a zillion and six to exonerate Darwin of racism

More fantasies here about the old racist Charles Darwin. Allegedly motivated by a desire to rid the world of slavery.

The reality, as I mentioned to friends recently, is more like this:
Darwin was a racist, pure and simple. Why can’t people just accept that fact, and get past it?

I have become increasingly suspicious of efforts to excuse it by saying that the old boy was also anti-slavery. Lots of racists are anti-slavery. That was true thousands of years ago, by the way.

Slavery is a bad social institution because it disrupts normal social ties. For example, a man can have two sons, one by his wife and one by a slave girl he rapes. He can lavish the best on the first son and sell the second down river to some horrible fate* – without thinking he is doing anything wrong.

That unfits men for normal relations with women – which are (under natural human circumstances) always negotiated relationships. (You want me? Why me? Why not my older sister? Have you spoken to my father? What are you offering? And, have you ever been married before? What happened?)

Over time, slavery leads to stupid immorality, brutality, and the downfall of the societies that sponsor it. It is not hard to see why.

(*By the way, that fact alone pretty much disproves Dawkins’s selfish gene thesis.)
A person can be a racist and be anti-slavery quite easily. Efforts to pretend otherwise are doubtless aimed at exonerating people like Darwin from being racists - which they were.

If you accept the argument in Descent of Man, you accept a racist argument

Here's a good piece at Uncommon Descent by Flannery, "Darwin’s 'Sacred' Cause: How Opposing Slavery Could Still Enslave" (16 February 2009), in which he addresses Adrian Desmond and James Moore's effort to airbrush Darwin's racism - one of many such - in Darwin's Sacred Cause: How a Hatred of Slavery Shaped Darwin's Views on Human Evolution.

In Darwin's day, "polygenists" believed that the races had separate origins, and "monogenists" believed that we all have the same origins. Monogeny is, for example, the view advanced in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve. Darwin didn't believe Adam and Even had existed, but he did believe that we evolved from a common ancester with apes.

However, the notion that therefore Darwin wasn't a racist is completely unfounded (go here for racist statements in his Descent of Man. ). Flannery writes, "In fact, it could easily be argued Darwin cleared out the polygenists to give way to a new generation of racial discriminators and engineers." Precisely.

Quite honestly, I find current Darwinist efforts to get the old Brit toff off the hook for racism embarrassing. Far from differing from his generation's racist beliefs, Darwin wanted to provide solid scientific support for them. And to the extent that anyone accepts the argument in Descent of Man, they accept a racist argument.

Has anyone noticed how Darwinists carefully protect themselves from having the issue framed bluntly in those terms?

Part of their technique is to confuse racism with support for slavery. Many racists have opposed slavery, as Darwin did. As a social institution, slavery creates many evils. For example, young men can force slave women to have sex with them, and produce children that they do not regard - and are not expected to regard - with paternal care.

That, by the way, as British sociologist Hilary Rose has pointed out, makes nonsense of Dawkins's claims about selfish genes. Much misrepresentation in this area depends on people simply not knowing or not noticing certain well-established facts about human nature, because the institutions that reveal them - slavery, for example - are no longer current in their part of the world.

Incidentally, recognition (or otherwise) of fatherhood does not depend on race. Russian aristocrats ignored their children by serf women who were of the same race as themselves.

Lastly, while slavery was a race-based institution in the Southern States, in other times and places, slaves and serfs have often been of the same ethnic group as their masters. The link between slavery and racism - forged naturally in our minds because of that history - is incidental. It is also very convenient to those who would airbrush Darwin's racism by pointing to his opposition to slavery.

The question is, why do they need to do this. Why can't they just admit it and move on?

One reason might be that they do in fact accept the argument in Descent of Man, which means that ...

Darwin reader: Darwin's racism

In the face of systematic attempts to efface from public view, Darwin's racism, a friend writes to offer quotes from Darwin's Descent of Man:

Savages are intermediate states between people and apes:

"It has been asserted that the ear of man alone possesses a lobule; but 'a rudiment of it is found in the gorilla' and, as I hear from Prof. Preyer, it is not rarely absent in the negro.

"The sense of smell is of the highest importance to the greater number of mammals--to some, as the ruminants, in warning them of danger; to others, as the Carnivora, in finding their prey; to others, again, as the wild boar, for both purposes combined. But the sense of smell is of extremely slight service, if any, even to the dark coloured races of men, in whom it is much more highly developed than in the white and civilised races."

"The account given by Humboldt of the power of smell possessed by the natives of South America is well known, and has been confirmed by others. M. Houzeau asserts that he repeatedly made experiments, and proved that Negroes and Indians could recognise persons in the dark by their odour. Dr. W. Ogle has made some curious observations on the connection between the power of smell and the colouring matter of the mucous membrane of the olfactory region as well as of the skin of the body. I have, therefore, spoken in the text of the dark-coloured races having a finer sense of smell than the white races....Those who believe in the principle of gradual evolution, will not readily admit that the sense of smell in its present state was originally acquired by man, as he now exists. He inherits the power in an enfeebled and so far rudimentary condition, from some early progenitor, to whom it was highly serviceable, and by whom it was continually used."

[From Denyse: Decades ago, I distinguished myself by an ability to smell sugar in coffee. It wasn't very difficult, with a bit of practice, and it helped to sort out the office coffee orders handily. My best guess is that most people could learn the art if they wanted to. Most human beings don't even try to develop their sense of smell - we are mostly occupied with avoiding distressing smells or eliminating or else covering them up. I don't of course, say that we humans would ever have the sense of smell of a wolf, but only that Darwin's idea here is basically wrong and best explained by racism. ]

"It appears as if the posterior molar or wisdom-teeth were tending to become rudimentary in the more civilised races of man. These teeth are rather smaller than the other molars, as is likewise the case with the corresponding teeth in the chimpanzee and orang; and they have only two separate fangs. ... In the Melanian races, on the other hand, the wisdom-teeth are usually furnished with three separate fangs, and are generally sound; they also differ from the other molars in size, less than in the Caucasian races.

"It is an interesting fact that ancient races, in this and several other cases, more frequently present structures which resemble those of the lower animals than do the modern. One chief cause seems to be that the ancient races stand somewhat nearer in the long line of descent to their remote animal-like progenitors."

[From Denyse: The nice thing about teeth is that, if they give trouble, they can simply be pulled. I would be reluctant to found a big theory on the size or convenience of teeth, given that thsi fact must have occurred to our ancestors many thousands of years ago.]

"It has often been said, as Mr. Macnamara remarks, that man can resist with impunity the greatest diversities of climate and other changes; but this is true only of the civilised races. Man in his wild condition seems to be in this respect almost as susceptible as his nearest allies, the anthropoid apes, which have never yet survived long, when removed from their native country."
[From Denyse: Native North Americans often perished from human diseases to which they had not become immune in childhood. That is probably unrelated to the inability of anthropoid apes to stand cold climates.]

This includes the degraded morals of lower races:

"The above view of the origin and nature of the moral sense, which tells us what we ought to do, and of the conscience which reproves us if we disobey it, accords well with what we see of the early and undeveloped condition of this faculty in mankind.... A North-American Indian is well pleased with himself, and is honoured by others, when he scalps a man of another tribe; and a Dyak cuts off the head of an unoffending person, and dries it as a trophy. ... With respect to savages, Mr. Winwood Reade informs me that the negroes of West Africa often commit suicide. It is well known how common it was amongst the miserable aborigines of South America after the Spanish conquest. ... It has been recorded that an Indian Thug conscientiously regretted that he had not robbed and strangled as many travellers as did his father before him. In a rude state of civilisation the robbery of strangers is, indeed, generally considered as honourable."

"As barbarians do not regard the opinion of their women, wives are commonly treated like slaves. Most savages are utterly indifferent to the sufferings of strangers, or even delight in witnessing them. It is well known that the women and children of the North-American Indians aided in torturing their enemies. Some savages take a horrid pleasure in cruelty to animals, and humanity is an unknown virtue..... Many instances could be given of the noble fidelity of savages towards each other, but not to strangers; common experience justifies the maxim of the Spaniard, "Never, never trust an Indian."

[From Denyse: If early modern Europeans in Canada had not trusted "Indians," they would all have died off pretty quickly.]

"The other so-called self-regarding virtues, which do not obviously, though they may really, affect the welfare of the tribe, have never been esteemed by savages, though now highly appreciated by civilised nations. The greatest intemperance is no reproach with savages."

"I have entered into the above details on the immorality of savages, because some authors have recently taken a high view of their moral nature, or have attributed most of their crimes to mistaken benevolence. These authors appear to rest their conclusion on savages possessing those virtues which are serviceable, or even necessary, for the existence of the family and of the tribe,--qualities which they undoubtedly do possess, and often in a high degree."

[From Denyse: Charles Darwin, let me introduce you to Hollywood, before you say any more silly things about the supposed immorality of "savages." ]

Making slavery understandable, though of course distasteful now:

"Slavery, although in some ways beneficial during ancient times, is a great crime; yet it was not so regarded until quite recently, even by the most civilised nations. And this was especially the case, because the slaves belonged in general to a race different from that of their masters."

[From Denyse: Not really. In ancient times, slaves were typically unransomed captives in war, convicted criminals, or people who had fallen into irrecoverable debt. In Roman times, there would be nothing unusual about being a slave to someone of the same race as oneself. Slavery based on race alone was an early modern legal invention, aimed against blacks.]

Mass killings of savages is understandable as a type of species extinction:

"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla."

"The partial or complete extinction of many races and sub-races of man is historically known....When civilised nations come into contact with barbarians the struggle is short, except where a deadly climate gives its aid to the native race.... The grade of their civilisation seems to be a most important element in the success of competing nations. A few centuries ago Europe feared the inroads of Eastern barbarians; now any such fear would be ridiculous."

"[Flinders Island], situated between Tasmania and Australia, is forty miles long, and from twelve to eighteen miles broad: it seems healthy, and the natives were well treated. Nevertheless, they suffered greatly in health....With respect to the cause of this extraordinary state of things, Dr. Story remarks that death followed the attempts to civilise the natives." [--Obviously the problem was trying to civilize these barbarians!]

"Finally, although the gradual decrease and ultimate extinction of the races of man is a highly complex problem, depending on many causes which differ in different places and at different times; it is the same problem as that presented by the extinction of one of the higher animals."

Of course the degradation extends to the intellectual:

"There is, however, no doubt that the various races, when carefully compared and measured, differ much from each other,--as in the texture of the hair, the relative proportions of all parts of the body ...Their mental characteristics are likewise very distinct; chiefly as it would appear in their emotional, but partly in their intellectual faculties. Every one who has had the opportunity of comparison, must have been struck with the contrast between the taciturn, even morose, aborigines of S. America and the light-hearted, talkative negroes. There is a nearly similar contrast between the Malays and the Papuans who live under the same physical conditions, and are separated from each other only by a narrow space of sea."

[From Denyse: I would imagine that the aborigines of South America felt some resentment over the loss of their continent to invaders from Europe ... ]

" A certain amount of absorption of mulattoes into negroes must always be in progress; and this would lead to an apparent diminution of the former. The inferior vitality of mulattoes is spoken of in a trustworthy work as a well-known phenomenon; and this, although a different consideration from their lessened fertility, may perhaps be advanced as a proof of the specific distinctness of the parent races."

"So far as we are enabled to judge, although always liable to err on this head, none of the differences between the races of man are of any direct or special service to him. The intellectual and moral or social faculties must of course be excepted from this remark."

And... drum roll.., the main conclusion:

"The main conclusion arrived at in this work, namely, that man is descended from some lowly organised form, will, I regret to think, be highly distasteful to many. But there can hardly be a doubt that we are descended from barbarians. The astonishment which I felt on first seeing a party of Fuegians on a wild and broken shore will never be forgotten by me, for the reflection at once rushed into my mind-such were our ancestors. These men were absolutely naked and bedaubed with paint, their long hair was tangled, their mouths frothed with excitement, and their expression was wild, startled, and distrustful. ... He who has seen a savage in his native land will not feel much shame, if forced to acknowledge that the blood of some more humble creature flows in his veins."

[From Denyse: Sounds like a local rave to me. Not my ancestors (who were, as it happens, rigidly correct people, but my 2009 fellow Torontonians.)]

"For my own part I would as soon be descended from ...[a] monkey, or from that old baboon... --as from a savage who delights to torture his enemies, offers up bloody sacrifices, practices infanticide without remorse, treats his wives like slaves, knows no decency, and is haunted by the grossest superstitions.

[From Denyse: Yuh, I know. I know women who have divorced guys like that too ... but, when founding a theory in science, it strikes me that ... ]

And let's not forget sexism!

"The chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is shewn by man's attaining to a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than can woman--whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands...We may also infer, from the law of the deviation from averages, so well illustrated by Mr. Galton, in his work on 'Hereditary Genius,' that if men are capable of a decided pre-eminence over women in many subjects, the average of mental power in man must be above that of woman."

"The greater intellectual vigour and power of invention in man is probably due to natural selection, combined with the inherited effects of habit, for the most able men will have succeeded best in defending and providing for themselves and for their wives and offspring."

[From Denyse: Re women vs. men: Actually, if we leave Darwin's obsession with natural selection out of the matter for a moment, we can come up with a simple explanation for the difference between men's and women's achievements. Men are far more likely to win Nobel Prizes than women - but also far more likely to sit on Death Row.

For most normal achievements, women will do as well as men, given a chance. Women do just as well as men at being, say, a family doctor, an accountant, a real estate agent, a high school teacher, etc.

It's only in outstanding achievements - either for good OR for ill - that men tend to dominate. One way of seeing this is that the curve of women's achievements fits inside the curve of men's achievements, either way.

Natural selection does not explain this because most men who have outstanding achievements do not contribute a great deal to the gene pool as a consequence.

Either they produce few or no children, or their children do nothing outstanding. So Darwin did not really have a good explanation for this fact.

What should we do? Breeding of people and letting the weak die off:

"The advancement of the welfare of mankind is a most intricate problem: all ought to refrain from marriage who cannot avoid abject poverty for their children; for poverty is not only a great evil, but tends to its own increase by leading to recklessness in marriage. On the other hand, as Mr. Galton has remarked, if the prudent avoid marriage, whilst the reckless marry, the inferior members tend to supplant the better members of society. Man, like every other animal, has no doubt advanced to his present high condition through a struggle for existence consequent on his rapid multiplication; and if he is to advance still higher, it is to be feared that he must remain subject to a severe struggle. Otherwise he would sink into indolence, and the more gifted men would not be more successful in the battle of life than the less gifted. Hence our natural rate of increase, though leading to many and obvious evils, must not be greatly diminished by any means. There should be open competition for all men; and the most able should not be prevented by laws or customs from succeeding best and rearing the largest number of offspring."

"We civilized men, on the other hand, do our utmost to check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, the maimed, and the sick; we institute poor-laws; and our medical men exert their utmost skill to save the life of every one to the last moment. There is reason to believe that vaccination has preserved thousands, who from a weak constitution would formerly have succumbed to small-pox. Thus the weak members of civilized societies propagate their kind. No one who has attended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must be highly injurious to the race of man. It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man himself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed.”

[From Denyse: But how would anyone know who the "worst animals" are among people?]

Message to Darwinists: Quit lying about Darwin's racism. It is not doing you any good.

Darwinists: Re the white–black-gorilla thing Quit lying about the fact that Darwin thought that black people are closer to gorillas than white people are. Just own up to it, reject it, and move on.

Of course, you must then admit that Darwin's whole idea of how different species develop is not a good one. Because you know perfectly well that Darwin's key point in Descent of Man was that different races are in the process of becoming different species.

Do you believe that, or not? I suspect you don't. Disowning Darwin's theory is surely a small price to pay, to move on to a post-"scientific racism" world?

And if not, why not?

Scholars also turn a blind eye to the argument for racism that eugenicists drew from The Descent. Darwin there claimed that the break between apes and man in evolution fell "between the negro or Australian and the gorilla." West argues that Darwin's allegation about blacks belonging to "a more primitive stage of human evolution" soon became a powerful scientific rationale for racist public policies, including laws against miscegenation*.
*Miscegenation means marrying a person of a different skin shade from oneself, and then having kids. It is the kind of offence only a demented society could invent. Darwinism helped dement societies in that specific way, because Darwin and his followers thought human groups were separating into different species. If Darwinists refuse to repent of such nonsense, I recommend disbelieving everything else they say.

Watson’s descent down Mt. Improbable: A summary

John West of the Discovery Institute has a long and interesting post on the historical role of Watson’s research lab in promoting eugenics: (Note: Go here and here for previous stories on eminent geneticist Watson’s descent into political correctness hell.)
Eminent evolutionist James Watson, winner of the Nobel Prize for co-discovering the structure of DNA, is sparking controversy in Great Britain for suggesting that blacks are inferior to whites due to evolution. But there is nothing particularly extraordinary about Watson's views. As I document in chapter 7 of my forthcoming book , there is a long history of evolutionists using Darwinism to justify racism—including Darwin himself.

Watson is past director and current Chancellor of the prestigious biological research lab at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Ironically, that lab has deep connections to Darwinian racism of years gone by. Early in the twentieth century it was the headquarters for one of the most virulent American eugenics groups, the Eugenics Record Office, which promoted forced sterilization and opposed immigration to America by ethnic groups considered lower on the evolutionary scale than Anglo-Saxon whites. Back then the lab was directed by Harvard-trained geneticist Charles Davenport. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Davenport held views about blacks and evolution hauntingly similar to Watson's.

The current flap started with a profile of Watson in the Sunday Times in England, where Watson's views were described thus:
He says that he is “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really”, and I know that this “hot potato” is going to be difficult to address. His hope is that everyone is equal, but he counters that “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”. He says that you should not discriminate on the basis of colour, because “there are many people of colour who are very talented, but don’t promote them when they haven’t succeeded at the lower level”. He writes that “there is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so”.

Watson's comments are inspiring a furor in England, where he has just arrived for a speaking tour.

I keep having to pinch myself to remind myself that many educated, intelligent people actually don’t know about the role Darwin’s theory has played, almost from its inception in promoting eugenics and upholding racism.

All the more strange is the fact that there should be no surprise about why. Essentially, the view of human history that Darwin outlined made racism appear reasonable to his contemporaries, just as it does to Watson today. According to Darwin, humans were not planned, they just happened. The smart ones survived.

And mark what follows: Just as ravens are, generally speaking, smarter than pigeons, so one race of humans could be, generally speaking, smarter than another. And - this is the payload - in the materialist context that Darwin and his fellows accepted (and Watson accepts today) relative intelligence is an indicator of value. In other words, the consequence of making humans out to be “just another animal species” is that racism becomes a reasonable, defensible view for which evidence can be accumulated - evidence on which judgments of value can be made.

As I have written elsewhere, to prevent the very considerable social unrest that a materialist system must generate, the materialist makes and enforces thousands of political correctness rules against telling the truth, precisely to avoid raising the spectre of such summary value judgements. Hence the fall of ex-Harvard prez Larry Summers for saying only what everyone knows: That more men than women are naturally interested in math and hard sciences. Even if Summers were wrong, the question is at least debatable. But he isn’t wrong, just politically incorrect.

Seek and Find draws my attention to this article in American Thinker on the Watson affair, noting more or less the same thing:
The Truth is that the outrage here isn't Dr. Watson's remarks; they're either true or not. What's outrageous is that we're suffering under the yoke of those to whom Truth means nothing -- the practitioners of a dark faith. They don't care if a statement is correct, only whether it's politically correct. They hate the Truth when it contradicts their agenda, and they'll stop at nothing to still the tongues of those who would dare voice it. Racists? These miscreants are infinitely worse. They are Truthists.
And what is the Truth about racial differences? For one thing, is it logical and rational to claim that, except for appearance and a few diseases and conditions of the body, every group is the same in every way?

This is the left's implication, and it's absurd. It seems especially odd when you consider that most of these inquisitors are secularists who subscribe to the theory of evolution. Yet, despite their belief that different groups "evolved" in completely different parts of the world, operating in different environments and subject to different stresses, they would have us believe that all groups are identical in terms of the multitude of man's talents and in every single measure of mental capacity. Why, miracle of miracles, all these two-legged cosmic accidents, the product of a billions-of-years journey from the primordial soup to primacy among creatures, whose evolution was influenced by perhaps millions of factors, wound up being precisely the same. It's really the best argument for God I've ever heard, as such a statistical impossibility could only exist if it was ordained by the one with whom all things are possible.

Theodore Dalrymple has noted that the chief purpose of political correctness is public humiliation in the interests of social control - by forcing otherwise decent people to lie - and, I would add, to watch others be destroyed only for saying what everyone knows or suspects is true.

Hasn’t there always been racism? Yes, but a non-materialist system, whether Western or Eastern, can reject racism without forcing people to lie. In the Western monotheistic systems, every gift comes from God and therefore all humans are equal in God’s eyes. The idea that inherent value arises from something other than God’s favour is heresy. In an Eastern system, no one escapes karma (the accumulated effects of one’s choices), and thinking oneself superior is a state of illusion, not progress toward reality. Materialism is actually the only intellectually well developed system I know of in which differences in ability actually become differences in value.

It will be interesting to see how the Darwin industry spins the Watson affair next year, given their big plans for the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth. Me, I am going to see the Expelled movie, which opens. I gather, on Darwin’s birthday.

Note on race and intelligence: I think Watson has a much poorer case than Summers. True, IQ is mostly inherited. But the difference IQ makes becomes important mainly at the margins. A child who is severely developmentally delayed may need assisted living all his life, and a child who is very bright may become the next world chess champion. But what about the billions of us somewhere in the middle? If anyone thinks that the difference between one teacher and another, one dentist and another, one auto mechanic and another, is likely to turn on a few IQ points, that person is not a very skilled observer of the marketplace. Second, it is a great error to assume that because a region (cf Africa) is underdeveloped, therefore its people are dumb. They used to say that about Ireland, today’s “Celtic Tiger.” Now they say it about Africa, which may likewise be entirely transformed a century from now. The causes of underdevelopment must be sought in the specifics of history, not generalizations based on grand concepts like intelligence. An African friend complained to me years ago that one of his country’s problems was that, in general, men had little regard for technical disciplines like engineering, preferring to study philosophy. He knew many doctors of philosophy but no one who could fix his air conditioner. If my friend is correct, the problem doesn’t turn on intelligence at all, but on what his society values. I should think it much harder to get a doctorate in philosophy than a certificate in air conditioner repair.

DNA pioneer James Watson embroiled in PC racism uproar: Updates

Watson is currently suspended from chancelor duties.

Watson’s own institute has itself been linked to historical Darwinian racism, even though it dutifully denounced him.

Also, here’s a spoof interview from The Brites on the reaction of a paragon of political correctness, trying to hold together Darwinism and egalitarianism. (Of COURSE it doesn’t work. As I point out here, you can’t have both Darwinism and egalitarianism. The only possible result is PC idiocy. )

More seriously, a friend offers some brief extracts from Watson’s book DNA:
"Our discovery had put an end to a debate as old as the human species: Does life have some magical, mystical essence, or is it, like any chemical reaction carried out in a science class, the product of normal physical and chemical processes? Is there something divine at the heart of a cell that brings it to life? The double helix answered that question with a definitive No" (xii).

No?
"Only with the discovery of the double helix and the ensuing genetic revolution have we had grounds for thinking that the powers held traditionally to be the exclusive property of the gods might one day be ours. Life, we now know, is nothing but a vast array of coordinated chemical reactions. The 'secret' to that coordination is the breathtakingly complex set of instructions inscribed, again chemically, in our DNA" (396).

One of the most innovative scientists I know has strictly cautioned me against any kind of “nothing buttery” as observed above.
Watson is nonetheless generous, after his fashion:
I do not dispute the right of individuals to look to religion for a private moral compass, but I do object to the assumption of too many religious people that atheists live in a moral vacuum. Those of us who feel no need for a moral code written down in an ancient tome have, in my opinion, recourse to an innate moral intuition long ago shaped by natural selection promoting social cohesion in groups of our ancestors.

But, unbelievers that we are, Montreal neuroscientist Mario Beauregard and I doubt that any such “innate moral intuition” can be created by the magic of natural selection. The moral intuition of relatedness come rather from the relationship between our limited minds and the mind that created the universe in which we live

Oh, well, it is obvious that Watson is not a corner stool at our local coffee klatsch. He doesn’t even like Gattaca, whose limitations I concede myself - but he dislikes it for entirely different* reasons:
In addition to laying out a misleadingly dismal vision of our future within the film itself, the creators of Gattaca concocted a promotional tag line aimed at the deepest prejudices against genetic knowledge: "There is no gene for the human spirit." It remains a dangerous blind spot in our society that so many wish this were so. If the truth revealed by DNA could be accepted without fear, we should not despair for those who follow us. [p 405]

Well, it’s just true. There is NO gene for the human spirit. That doesn’t mean that science could never discover anything about the human spirit. It means that looking for a God gene (God spot, God module) that creates it is a waste of time.

James Watson apologizes ... sort of

According to the Guardian, following the row that erupted over his characterization of people of African origin as less intelligent (whatever that means, given that no one has ever defined “intelligence” in an empirically meaningful way), DNA pioneer Watson has backed off:
Prof Watson's statement did not clarify what his views on the issue of race and intelligence are, but he hinted that he had been misquoted.

I somehow doubt that. More later.

Update!: The “more later”: According to the Independent, Watson’s own institute has apparently disowned his comments:
"Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory does not engage in any research that could even form the basis of the statements attributed to Dr Watson," the institute's president, Bruce Stillman, said. Dr Watson's comments were entirely his own and "in no way reflect the mission, goals, or principles of [the laboratory's] board, administration or faculty".

Similar condemnation followed from other parts of the US scientific establishment, where the incendiary issue of race and science is intimately bound up in the history of slavery and segregation. "We have enough problems in this country without Nobel laureate American scientists pontificating in error about fields of science outside their own expertise," said the editor of ScienceWeek, Dan Agin, "especially when the issues are vital to public policy and when what they say rips the American social fabric into pieces."

His institute would not have reacted so rapidly if there was much chance he had been misquoted.

In my view, his capitulation illustrates the power of political correctness in our society. Whether PC happens to be fronting something true, false, or nonsensical, it is the new Inquisition. (Yes, of course, PC might happen to be fronting something true - remember, a stopped clock, even one that stopped back in the 1970s, is right twice a day.)

Here are some comments from friends:

One friend suggests that Watson is behaving like a true Darwinian fundamentalist in that he assumes that if some situation is believed to be true today, it MUST HAVE come about because of natural selection. Thus, anecdote becomes fact, and the newly created “fact” becomes “evidence” for evolution, and ... well then whatever he believes, on whatever basis, is now incontrovertible.

Another friend note that, while Darwinism does not necessarily imply racism, the alleged inequality of races was offered as EVIDENCE for Darwinian evolution in the nineteenth century.

A third notes that if a collection of Watson’s goofy remarks were published, it would be a long book. And perhaps it will find a publisher, too.

WILL Darwinists get back into the eugenics business?

So ... now, James Watson, who has declared that (Darwinian) evolution is both a law and a fact, has since proclaimed,
... black people were less intelligent than white people and the idea that "equal powers of reason" were shared across racial groups was a delusion.

And this hard on the heels of Richard Dawkins* spilling on about the "fantastic success" of the "Jewish lobby."

Some people wonder what is happening. Bill was wondering whether Darwinists would get back into the eugenics business big time. Having watched H.L. Mencken-style Social Darwinism morph into sociobiology and then get rebranded as evolutionary psychology, I have some idea what's driving the trend: power

Once people gain the right to simply ban opposing ideas, they can afford to be more up front about what they really think.

By the way, in case anyone wonders about whether evolutionary psychology is simply rebranded sociobiology, well, Dawkins apparently said that himself, as I noted in By Design or by Chance?.

What we sometimes miss is the underlying reason why Darwinists behave this way. If you believe that human beings have minds that are made in the image of - or are a local image of - a divine mind or cosmic law, then the reason why racism is wrong is obvious: Race relates to externals, not eternals. Yes, some people will believe that and still be racists. But here's the difference: to the extent that theists are racists, they are wrong. I don't mean politically incorrect or contrary to the pieties of liberalism. I mean wrong about the very nature of our universe.

They are wrong even though some qualities are distributed unevenly across ethnic groups. Body type, for example, plays a key role in determining the competitive sports in which one might excel professionally, and we get our body type mostly from our forebears. But none of that speaks to the value of a human being, only to how he might best use his time.

But what if you are, as most committed Darwinists are, a materialist? Then a human being is simply a meat puppet. At that point, distinctions that would be discounted in the light of eternity actually determine a person's value. Or else he has no value, in which case ...

Of course, decent people won't just accept that. No, instead, they pass dozens or thousands of political correctness rules against taking the inevitable consequences of Darwinism and materialism seriously. And they flirt with thwarting their self-imposed rules. Or else they concoct grand, improbable schemes like this one and this one, to dispense with nature altogether. But that is all they can do, and in the long run, it leads to absurdities.

Legitimized racism is an inevitable consequence of materialism, and I expect the Darwinists know that as well as anyone else. I suppose at this point their social policy arm (liberalism, in its current form) had better start drafting a whole bunch more daft political correctness rules. It's either that or eugenics.

*Note: I think what upset people about Dawkins's comments is the assumption that there is something unusual about a successful Jewish lobby in Washington. There had better be a successful Jewish lobby in Washington, let me tell you. Any interest group that doesn't have a successful lobby in Washington is a non-starter. Canadians have one of the best lobbies in Washington. Why not bash us then, and give the Jews a rest? Because, for whatever reason, many people don't hate us and they do hate Jews, whom they commonly do not even bother to distinguish from the Israelis.
